WHAT WE DO

How we offer our programs

VOA works with local youth groups (Scout units, Church Groups and other non-profit organizations) to provide an opportunity for their youth to experience our outdoor program areas.

For Younger Youth (6 – 13):

We offer “introductory” level activities.  For example, if your younger Youth Group is interested in an introductory “day sail” we will coordinate with your adult leaders to schedule a day to get your scouts out on the water.  For the younger participant groups, we ask for a higher number of adults to participate as well (typically a parent/guardian).

For Older Youth (14 – 20):

We offer the opportunity to plan and carry out more challenging outdoor experiences.  For example, if your older Youth Group is interested in a weekend canoe camping trip, our trek leaders will work with your adult leaders and youth to plan, schedule and we will provide an experienced volunteer guide to assist you with the actual trip.

Sailing

Our primary sailboat is “Lynx” a 2018 Lagoon 42 sailing catamaran. We start out by providing an introductory “day sail” for the participants. For those youth who wish to learn more about sailing and boating safety we encourage them to join our Sea Scout Ship.

Paddle Sports

We have a fleet of canoes and kayaks along with a full set of equipment to support our paddle sports and canoe camping activities.   We typically recommend starting with a short outing on a local lake (flatwater) as an introduction to paddle sports.

Camping

Our primary camping location is our 124 acre property in Buckingham County, VA.  Our proterty is centrally located to historic sites (Appomattox Courthouse) and the largest State Forest in Virginia (Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest).  We are also conveniently located close the James River which allows us to use the property as a staging point for our river trips.

Learning Opportunities

Our guides provide age and activity appropriate skills training. Safety is a key concern of ours. We teach the participants about safe practices related to their activity and are always conscientious of the weather. For the youth participants that are interested in advanced boating skills and more challenging adventures they have the option to join our Sea Scout Ship.
