SEA SCOUT SHIP 42

Working with scouts

Through our history of working with Scouts over the past decade we were introduced to the Sea Scout program. VOA sponsors or “charters” Sea Scout Ship 42.

Sea Scouts is a unique program within the Boy Scouts of America, and it is the second oldest program in the BSA. Just as the name implies, the Sea Scout program focuses on boating. Activities include in, on, under and around the water programs. Challenging rank advancement (skills and leadership) prepare youth to be safe on the water and treasure our maritime heritage.

The Sea Scout mission is to prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. You might think that Sea Scouts focuses on specialized information and skills, but learning leadership skills, performing community service, and providing good social experiences are also critical elements of the program. Sea Scouting is all of these things and more, but the primary purpose is “forming responsible and caring adults.”

Sea Scouts is open to all youth (male and female). Youth must be 13 years of age and completed the eighth grade or be 14 to join Sea Scouts. Youth can stay in Sea Scouts until their 21st birthday. Ship 42 is a high adventure ship focused on sailing, canoeing and boating safety. Our Sea Scouts have sailed around the US Virgin Islands, the Bahamas and up to Annapolis, MD on the Chesapeake Bay. The Scouts have also planned and completed a 70-mile-long (6 day) canoe camping trip along the James River.
